It is not just about teeth
When your teeth affect your everyday life
You deserve to understand your options.
Avoiding certain foods. Hiding your smile. Putting off a conversation because you are worried about the cost. If any of that feels familiar, you are not alone.
Start with a conversation. A consultant can explain the treatment options and ways to pay, then help arrange an assessment with an independent partner dentist when you are ready.
The middle path
What it actually is
Stability, without the full arch price.
Two or more implants act as anchors, and the denture clips onto them. It stays put while you talk and eat, and it comes out for cleaning. For people who already wear a denture and hate the movement, it is often the single biggest change available to them.
It needs fewer implants than a fixed full arch, which is why it usually costs less. Your dentist will tell you at the consultation whether your jaw suits it.
What it typically involves
- Two or more implants placed as anchor points
- A denture made or adapted to clip onto them
- Fewer implants than a fixed arch, so usually a lower cost
Decided by: the dentist, after the examination and the 3D scans.
Is it me?
Who this suits, and who it does not
Worth knowing before you sit down.
This is a guide to the conversation, not a diagnosis. What suits you is settled at the consultation once the dentist has seen your scans.
Usually a good fit when
- You wear a denture already and it moves, clicks or rubs
- You want real stability without the cost of a fixed full arch
- You are comfortable with teeth that come out for cleaning
- You want fewer implants and a shorter treatment than full arch work
Probably not the one when
- You specifically want teeth that never come out. A fixed full arch is the treatment for that
- Only one or two teeth are missing, where a single implant is simpler
- Your dentist finds the anchor sites do not have enough bone without grafting first
Step by step
How the treatment runs
So nothing on the day is a surprise.
Timings are what our partner dentists typically see. Yours come from your own treatment plan, not from this page.
1
Assessment and planning
Examination, X-rays and 3D scans. The dentist works out where the anchor implants can go, how many your jaw suits, and whether your existing denture can be adapted or needs remaking.
Your consult
2
Implants placed
The anchor implants go in. Fewer implants than a fixed arch means a shorter appointment for most people. Anaesthetic and sedation options are discussed beforehand.
One appointment
3
Healing and the denture
The implants integrate with the bone while your denture is made or adapted to clip onto them. You are not left without teeth during this.
Weeks to months
4
Fitting and adjustment
The denture is fitted onto the anchors and adjusted until it sits right. Expect a short settling in period and a follow up or two.
After healing
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. This page is general information, not advice about your own case, and it is not a substitute for an examination. Speak with your dentist about the risks and benefits before proceeding.

Living with it afterwards
- It comes out for cleaning, which some people prefer and some do not
- The clips wear over time and are replaced as part of normal maintenance
- Dentures need relining occasionally as the jaw changes shape
- Ask your dentist how often the clips and the denture typically need attention
Afterwards
It is not done at the last appointment
Maintenance is part of the deal.
Implant treatment is a long term thing, and what happens in the years after matters as much as the treatment itself. Ask your dentist what the maintenance schedule looks like, what it costs, and what to watch for.
Nobody can promise you how long yours will last. What your dentist can do is tell you what they expect in your specific case, and what makes the difference.
If this is not it
The other two worth knowing about
Most people choosing between full mouth options are weighing these against each other. The comparison table on the treatments hub puts all six side by side.
Common questions
About Implant retained dentures
About this treatment specifically.
Anything clinical is settled by the dentist after the scans, but the consultant can tell you what to expect before you get there.
Ask before you book.
Leave your details and a consultant calls you back, usually the same day, to talk through whether this is likely to be your treatment.

How is this different from a normal denture?
A conventional denture rests on the gum and is held by suction or adhesive, which is why it can move. An implant retained denture clips onto implants anchored in the bone, so it stays where it is put.
It still comes out for cleaning. That is the main difference from a fixed full arch.
How many implants does it need?
Usually two or more per jaw, and your dentist decides the number from your 3D scan. It is fewer than a fixed full arch, which is the main reason it usually costs less.
Can my existing denture be used?
Sometimes it can be adapted, and sometimes a new one is made. Your dentist will tell you which at the consultation, after looking at the denture you have.
Does it feel like real teeth?
People who move to one from a conventional denture usually describe it as far more stable. It is still a denture though, and it still comes out.
Your dentist is the right person to set your expectations here, and it is worth asking them directly at the consultation.
What does it cost?
Fewer implants generally means a lower cost than a fixed full arch, but the figure still depends on your jaw, what has to come out first, and the denture itself. It is itemised in your written treatment plan.
